We are dedicated to reducing the numbers of unwanted pets, sick and injured pets, and homeless pets in our community. As much as we love the pets we care for, our ultimate goal is a community where there are no homeless, unwanted, or neglected pets. In order for this to happen, we need to prevent unwanted litters, create a healthy environment for our pets, and share the importance of humane treatment of animals.

In working towards this goal, we support affordable and/or free spay and neuter surgeries and vaccinations so people in our community can afford to keep their pets healthy and safe, as well as be active participants in the efforts to end pet overpopulation. Additionally, we provide a variety of pet and owner -related community services.

trap-neuter-release program (tnr)

Picture
High Desert Humane Society provides information and education on humane colony management of feral cats and spay/neuter surgery for feral cats. How it works:
  • Cats are trapped with humane wire traps.
  • Trapped cats are transported from the shelter in Globe to our veterinary partners where they are fixed, vaccinated, and ear-tipped.
  • They are taken back to where they were trapped and released.

Vaccinations Save Lives
COMING SOON: Low-Cost Vaccination Clinic
Vaccinating your pet is easy, inexpensive and essential for helping them enjoy a long, healthy life. Pet vaccines help protect your dog or cat from contagious diseases, many of which can cause serious illness or death. HDHS vaccinates all homeless animals upon intake and is hoping to provide low-cost vaccines to pet owners soon.
Veterinary Services and Assistance
Making veterinary care accessible is a core part of our mission. If you need financial assistance, we may be able to use grant funds to partially or fully cover the cost of your pet’s treatment. Please note that financial assistance is not guaranteed, and a deposit may be required to schedule your appointment.
Microchipping
Microchipping is a quick, safe procedure that ensures your pet’s ID is always there. The rice-sized chip is inserted between your pet’s shoulders and cannot be removed. It is not a tracking device, but if someone finds your lost pet, a quick scan will help them get back to you. Virtually all shelters and veterinarian’s offices have a scanner.

Spaying & Neutering Protects Your Pets’ Health
High Desert Humane Society advocates for spaying female pets and neutering male pets. In addition to preventing unwanted litters, altering your pet prior to maturity (at 4–6 months old, or before a female’s first heat cycle) offers the best protection against serious health issues and the development of negative behaviors. Pet Age: 2 months to 8 years with a healthy veterinary exam. Pre-anesthetic blood work is required for pets 5 to 8 years old at additional cost. Pet Weight: 3 to 120 pounds
Last Litter Program
HDHS is working within our community to reduce pet overpopulation, help prevent unplanned litters, and ensure that every animal has a home. With our Last Litter Program, we are able to offer free spay surgeries for cats and dogs brought in with adoptable litters.

Through the Last Litter Program, your mama cat or dog will be spayed at no cost by a partner veterinarian. The kittens or puppies will remain with High Desert to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before being adopted by their new families.
  • Appointments are required, and assistance is dependent on available space and resources.
  • The veterinary staff must also determine that your mama cat or dog is healthy enough to receive surgery, the kittens/puppies must be free of any contagious disease or illness, and they must be old enough to be separated from mama cat/dog.

pet food assistance

At the High Desert Humane Society, we understand that sometimes the choice can come down to feeding yourself or feeding your pet. We want you to be able to care for your pet in hard times. That’s why our Pet Food Bank provides free pet food to dogs and cats for pet owners in need.

Dog food is distributed at the thrift store and cat food is available at the cat house during open hours of operation. There is no guarantee on availability, amount or type of food available. Our ability to provide this service is dependent upon the donations we receive. It is first come, first served.
